The Centre for Data Science under the University of Macau (UM) Institute of Collaborative Innovation held a roundtable forum to discuss cross-border data flows between Macao and Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin as well as the resultant challenges and opportunities. The forum aimed to provide a platform for the interdisciplinary research team of the university to have a comprehensive discussion with government departments and industry representatives on how to seize the opportunities and establish a mechanism for data sharing and exchange.

The report by the UM research team analyses the legal framework for data protection in the two places and explores data security-related issues that may arise in the Cooperation Zone. Government departments and industry representatives discussed issues related to personal information protection, data sharing, and the establishment of exchange mechanisms, clarifying the key issues in administrative enforcement involving cross-border data flows and the challenges faced by small and medium-sized enterprises.
