In this issue, we use numbers to showcase the latest developments of the university in teaching, research, and campus facilities.
Since its founding four decades ago, UM has undergone dramatic changes, the greatest one being the construction of a new campus on Hengqin Island. With the support of the central government and the Macao Special Administrative Region government, the university moved onto its current campus in 2014. The new campus covers 1.0926 square kilometres and is approximately 20 times larger than the old one. The university now has more space to pursue its educational philosophy and has introduced a residential college system. Today, ten residential colleges on campus facilitate whole-person education.
Providing quality education is an important part of the university’s mission. Currently, there are 12,500 students at UM, which is more than 70 times the number of students that existed 40 years ago. To date, the university has produced over 60,000 alumni who have made significant contributions to society in a wide range of fields. On the scientific research front, the university has also achieved impressive results. In 1993, when the university established its research fund, the number of journal articles published by faculty members was only four. But as of the end of October 2021, the number of published journal articles by faculty members and students exceeded 1,800. The university has also received approval to establish three state key laboratories, showing the central government’s recognition of the university’s achievements in scientific research.
