The University of Macau (UM) held the 2020 Long Service Award & Outstanding Administrative Staff Award Ceremony in the University Hall today (18 May), in recognition of the efforts of its staff and their contributions to the university. 169 staff members received the Long Service Award for 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years of service respectively, and 19 administrative staff members received the Outstanding Administrative Staff Award.

UM Rector Yonghua Song is very happy to witness five colleagues who have served the university for 40 years and more than 160 colleagues who have worked for the university for more than 10 years receiving the awards. He considers the loyalty and sense of belonging of these colleagues to be invaluable and highly admirable. He also congratulated the 19 colleagues who received the Outstanding Administrative Staff Award for their dedication to their work and for setting an example by winning the recognition of their superiors and the votes of UM colleagues. He expressed hope that the administrative staff at the university would continue to create an efficient working environment that would help the university to continue to improve the quality of its services, and that the academic staff would continue to teach with dedication and lead students to produce the desired teaching and research outcomes.

Joyce Chio of the Communications Office received the Long Service Award for 40 years of service at the university. Chio says she feels happy and honoured to have spent nearly two-thirds of her life with the university, growing together with the university and witnessing the university’s development into an international comprehensive public university. She adds that the biggest draw for her is a sense of collegiality among the colleagues and the good working environment.

Another recipient of the Long Service Award, Dean of Students Paul Pang, has worked at the university for 35 years. He says that during his 35 years of service at the university, he has seen the university nurture many outstanding graduates who have gone on to become pillars of society, which he considers the greatest reward and satisfaction of his work. His most memorable achievements include working with external advisers to develop an academic quality assurance system, writing a proposal to create a residential college system and an Honours College, and founding many university teams such as the Mandarin Debating Team and the Symphonic Band. He was also involved in the awarding of honorary doctorates. He adds it has been a great pleasure to see the smiles on the faces of the students who moved into the residential colleges and to witness the outstanding achievements of the students and alumni.

Vania Chang of the Academic Affairs Office received the Outstanding Administrative Staff Award. She is grateful to the university for the many years of training she has received, which has given her the opportunity to be exposed to different positions and responsibilities. She is also thankful for having good supervisors and a team of enthusiastic teammates. Whenever she received instructions from her supervisor to complete an unexpected task, the entire team would work together to complete the task while encouraging each other to work towards the same goal.
