The University of Macau (UM) and BoardWare Information System Limited (BoardWare) signed a strategic collaboration framework agreement today (3 February) in the university’s State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City (SKL-IOTSC). According to the agreement, both parties will establish a joint laboratory to cultivate more talent and develop advanced technologies for Macao by combining each other’s strengths and resources in research and development (R&D).

During the ceremony, Tai Kin Ip, director of the Economic and Technological Development Bureau; Yonghua Song, rector of UM and director of the SKL-IOTSC; and Chao Ka Chon, chairman of the Board of Directors and general manager of BoardWare, each delivered a speech and expressed their expectations for this collaboration. Afterwards, Song and Chao signed the agreement on behalf of UM and BoardWare. Guests who witnessed the signing of the agreement include Kou Hoi In, a deputy to the National People’s Congress and president of the Legislative Assembly of Macau; Chui Sai Peng, a deputy to the National People’s Congress and a member of the Legislative Assembly of Macau; Si Ka Lon, a deputy to the National People’s Congress and a member of the Legislative Assembly of Macau; Lam Kam Seng, chair of the UM University Council; Ip Kuai Lam, a member of the Administrative Committee of the Science and Technology Development Fund of Macao SAR; Rainbow Lei, president of Macau International Industrial Technology Development Association; Chao Wong On, president of directors of Macau International Industrial Technology Development Association; U Seng Pan, president of Macau Industry-University-Research Collaboration Association; Chui Tinyol, president of directors of Macau Industry-University-Research Collaboration Association, etc.

The joint lab established by UM and BoardWare will fully utilise the research advantages of both institutions in the fields of smart city technology, modern information technology, information security, public security, big data, internet of things, artificial intelligence, and cloud management. By integrating the R&D strengths and resources of both parties, the lab will carry out innovative research, promote each other’s development in related fields, create an innovative system for engineering, and provide a platform for technological innovation and industry-academia collaboration. Both UM and BoardWare expect this collaboration to become a model of close cooperation between Macao’s universities and businesses. Through this joint lab, they hope to nurture more innovative talent, create more technological achievements for Macao, and promote economic diversification and sustainable development of Macao, as well as the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

Seizing new opportunities, UM actively cooperates with the SAR government’s policies, explores new directions, and continues to implement strategies for scientific research, technological innovation and knowledge translation. In addition, it fully supports industry-academia collaboration and carries out interdisciplinary collaboration in teaching and research. In the future, UM will continue to combine the academic strengths of its Faculty of Science and Technology and the SKL-IOTSC, and will continue to initiate collaborations with outstanding technology companies in Macao.

Established in 2003, BoardWare is dedicated to developing efficient and reliable IT solutions to support various industries and government departments in Macao. While the company is based in Macao, it has established branches in other parts of the GBA, including Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Guangzhou.
