The University of Macau (UM) today (8 August) held an academic forum titled ‘The Prospect of Research in Humanities, Social Science, Business, Law and Education’. The event aimed to explore opportunities for the integration of and collaboration between different academic disciplines as well as to shed light on the future of research in these fields. The event attracted many UM scholars, researchers, and postgraduate students.
In his speech, UM Rector Yonghua Song said that in recent years UM has established new research centres and labs, including state key labs, for the studies of various disciplines, including humanities, social sciences, and science and technology. According to Song, it is now a good time to contemplate the direction of these fields, especially in terms of research. Song added that the forum provided a platform for scholars to exchange ideas on the possibilities in the development of different academic disciplines.
The forum was moderated by Prof Billy So, vice rector (student affairs) and chair professor of history at UM. The four keynote speakers were Prof Alan Chan, vice president (alumni and advancement) and Toh Puan Mahani Idris Daim Chair Professor of Humanities at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; Prof Hong Yingyi, Choh-Ming Li Professor of Marketing at the Chinese University of Hong Kong; Prof Angela Leung, director of the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, who is also a chair professor of history and Joseph Needham-Philip Mao Professor in Chinese History, Science, and Civilisation, at the University of Hong Kong; as well as Prof Yu Xingzhong, Anthony W and Lulu C Wang Professor in Chinese Law at Cornell University.
