At the Congregation 2019 held today (25 May), the University of Macau (UM) presented the Teaching Excellence Award, which recognises faculty members with outstanding performance in teaching. The recipient in the 2018/2019 academic year is Assistant Professor Dr Wang Ruibing from the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences.

Every year, the recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award is selected by a selection committee from numerous nominees through a rigorous process. Selection criteria include the following: teaching philosophy, professional knowledge in the relevant discipline, communication skills and teaching outcomes, contributions to the development of the discipline, ability to encourage self-driven learning by motivating students to pursue continuous intellectual growth, adoption of innovative teaching methods, and leadership skills in promoting teaching excellence within and outside of the university. Dr Wang has spared no effort to deepen the students’ understanding of professional knowledge through different teaching methods and a combination of theory and practice. He also adopts an interactive approach to increase student engagement in the classroom and to encourage creative thinking.

Dr Wang is appreciative of the award, saying that it shows recognition of his efforts in teaching. He enjoys his job as a teacher, and hopes that innovative teaching methods will enhance the students’ interest in learning. He says he will continue to incorporate more innovative elements into his teaching so as to increase student engagement in the classroom and help them experience the joy of thinking and overcoming challenges. He hopes students will acquire not only professional knowledge, but also analytical and problem-solving skills, from his lectures, so they can gain a competitive advantage.

Dr Wang obtained his PhD degree from the Department of Chemistry at the Queen’s University in Canada. His PhD thesis received a Best Paper Award from the university  and was nominated for the Governor General’s Gold Medals. Dr Wang joined UM in 2014 and currently teaches courses in the ICMS and the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine. He received the 2017/2018  ICMS Faculty-level Academic Award and a third prize in the Natural Science Award category of the 2018 Macao Science and Technology Awards.
