The number of outstanding students admitted by UM continues to rise this year

As the quality of teaching and research at the University of Macau (UM) continues to rise, more and more outstanding students have chosen to study at UM. This year, 343 outstanding students have been admitted by UM through the Principals’ Recommended Admission Scheme, which is higher compared to last year. Among them, 45 are ranked No 1 in their secondary school classes. Mainland students admitted by UM this year scored an average of 17 per cent higher than the admission marks required by tier-one universities for their respective provinces and cities.

For the 2018/2019 academic year, UM received 10,495 applications for bachelor’s degree programmes, hitting a new high in ten years, and 2,045 have been admitted. All students admitted through the Principals’ Recommended Admission Scheme will receive scholarships. Five students will receive the University of Macau Grand Lotus Scholarship; 91 will receive the University of Macau Golden Lotus Scholarship; 137 will receive the University of Macau Silver Lotus Scholarship; 110 will receive the University of Macau First Year Scholarship. Recipients of the University of Macau Grand Lotus Scholarship and the University of Macau Golden Lotus Scholarship are eligible for direct admission to the Honours College in their first year of study.

Many outstanding students from different provinces, cities, and autonomous regions in China have applied to UM this year, up 35 per cent from last year. The 467 mainland students admitted by UM scored an average of 17 per cent higher than the admission marks required by tier-one universities for their respective provinces and cities. Compared to last year, UM this year admitted twice the number of outstanding students from Guangdong province and Hong Kong in the Greater Bay Area, in order to nurture more professionals to contribute to the development of the Greater Bay Area. In an effort to support China’s poverty alleviation policy, UM admitted several outstanding students from Congjiang county.

UM also strives to recruit more international students and strengthen academic exchange and collaboration with regions covered by the Belt and Road initiative. The university hit a new record this year in terms of the quantity and quality of international students. The number of international students applying to UM increased 56 per cent from last year. Among them, 18 are top students from Chinese Independent High Schools in Malaysia.

The new cohort of outstanding students admitted by UM will continue to enhance UM’s academic atmosphere and output, and the university will continue to nurture high-calibre professionals in various fields to promote the development of the Greater Bay Area and China.
