UM students win first prize at Inter-University Invitational Civil Engineering Competition

Students Zhang Ailun, Zheng Huimin, and Kong Hou from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau (UM), recently won a first prize in the Tenth Inter-University Invitational Civil Engineering Competition. The award is testament to the skills and knowledge of UM students in the field of civil engineering.

This year’s competition required contestants to tackle the challenging issue of designing a curved bridge that can withstand both static loading and dynamic loading. Each team was required to design the structure of a bridge model, write a design proposal, produce a model, give a presentation, and test the model, all within two days. The competition attracted 15 teams from different universities, including Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Harbin Institute of Technology, Southwest Jiaotong University, Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology, the University of Hong Kong, the City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Monash University, Shinshu University, Hanyang University, the National University of Singapore, Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur, and UM. The instructors of the UM team is Prof Er Guokang and Prof Lam Chi Chiu from the FST.

The biennial competition aims to provide a platform for civil engineering students from around the world to showcase their creativity and skills, and to exchange ideas with their peers from different backgrounds. The first competition was held at Tsinghua University, Beijing, in 2000. UM was the host of the third competition in 2004 and the organiser of this year’s event.
