The hospitality industry has always been a major industry in Macao which is an international tourist destination. According to the Department of Statistics and Census Service, 22% of working labor worked in the hospitality industry in 2003. The figure increased substantially to 37% in 2008, indicating strong employment demand in this competitive and vibrant industry. With explosive information and intense competition, it is a must for employees to keep track of the latest development of the industry before making business decisions.

In view of this situation, the University of Macau, as a leading public university, will launch Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Hospitality Management next January to meet the demand of the local market. All courses in this programme will be taught by outstanding scholars and industry practitioners from the hospitality-related fields. In addition, students will have the opportunity to participate in an optional overseas field trip, for example, to Las Vegas in the United States for a week to draw on advanced experience from successful hospitality companies.

This programme is most suitable for employees who work in such industries as Tourism, Hotel, Restaurant, Conventions and Exhibitions and who possess bachelor’s degree in non-hospitality-related areas or bachelor’s degree in hospitality but would like to upgrade their knowledge through higher education within a relatively short period of time. This programme will help employees to grasp managerial knowledge and skills.

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree. The period of study of this programme is one year. Students of this programme are required to take six compulsory courses and two elective courses within seven months, and finish one Applied Business Project afterwards. Some of the courses in this programme are identical to those in the MBA Programme. Therefore, students may apply to join our MBA programme upon completion of courses of this programme and accumulation of sufficient working experience.

The primary medium of instruction will be English, with some guest speakers’ lectures to be delivered in Cantonese or Putonghua.

The deadline for application is 20 November 2009. For more details, please visit http://www.umac.mo/fba/postgrad_diploma/hospitality_management
