Four students from the University of Macau’s (UM) Faculty of Law received the Best Memorial Prize at the International Criminal Court (ICC) Moot Court Competition. 57 teams from around the world participated in the competition. The UM team was coached by assistant professor Sten Idris Verhoeven.

The three memorials, each of approximately10,000 words, reflect the UM team’s research and legal argumentation on a fictitious case dealing with a number of issues ranging from the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court and cyber-attacks as war crimes, to the victims’ right to participate in the proceedings.

The ICC Moot Court Competition is an annual competition on the law and procedure of the ICC, which takes place in the Hague, Netherlands. It is the second time that UM’s Faculty of Law has participated in this competition.

In the competition the team squared off against teams from Finland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, the United States, Singapore, Hong Kong, mainland China, and India, in front of experts on international criminal law. The four prize-winning students are Ms Zhu Xiaoqin, Ms Zhu Xiaoqing, Ms Wong Ka Kei, and Mr Zhuang Chen.
