“Pray for the safety of all people in Sichuan.” “Fighting! Get through the misfortune and be strong!” “People in the world send you love. Wish you stay strong and rebuild home soon.” These are the wishes of UM staff and students written on the wish cards that deliver their sincere condolence and sympathy to the victims of the Sichuan earthquake. Everyone in UM is shocked and distressed by the tragedy and worried about the homeless fellows in Sichuan. Soon after the news of the earthquake broke, UM students launched a donation drive widely in the university, setting up donation boxes and wish boards.
The donation initiatives spontaneously organized by the Chinese Mainland Student Association, UM Student’s Union, have got enormous responses from the university members. Currently, there are 97 students from Sichuan province studying in UM. The Student Affair Section of UM has now taken efforts to offer psychological counselling to these students, for the purpose of supporting them in the miserable time. It is said that most of the Sichuan students are emotionally stable now, despite that one student returned home immediately after the news of the earthquake broke.
UM Hostel Student’s Association held a memorial gathering in the East Asia Hall. UM staff and students prayed together for the dead souls in the disaster and wished that all people in Sichuan and the Sichuan students studying in UM stay strong and recover from the misery soon.
The official channel of donation was set up soon after the earthquake and has already lasted a whole week. All the generous donations will be handed over to the needed through related institutions.
