The University of Macau (UM) today (16 March) kicked off the five-day Career and Internship Fair 2015. It is the first Career and Internship Fair held on the new campus and also the largest one in UM’s history. This year’s fair attracted more than 100 companies, offering over 5,000 jobs in more than 20 industries, to over 1,300 graduating UM students.

According to UM’s latest Further Studies and Placement Survey, the employment and further studies rate among bachelor’s degree graduates in the 2013/2014 academic year was 92 per cent, distributed mainly across three industries, namely education, entertainment and gaming, and hospitality, with a median monthly income of MOP 14,000. 20 per cent of these graduates chose to pursue further studies.

From 15 March to 20 March, exhibiting companies will conduct on-the-spot job interviews for applicants. UM will also hold 35 recruitment talks.

Prof Philip Chen, dean of UM’s Faculty of Science and Technology, says that in addition to pursuing academic excellence, UM also places great emphasis on providing internship opportunities to students to help them develop practical skills and gain hands-on experience so that they can better serve Macao after graduation.

Elvo Sou, head of the Student Counselling and Development Section of the Student Affairs Office and organiser of the fair, says this year’s fair is the largest in UM’s history, and not only does it provide various employment and internship opportunities, it also teaches students how to make career choices through a number of career talks. He adds that UM plans to launch a series of programmes to help students start their own business, to answer the need for economic diversification of Macao.

Fourth-year Portuguese major Lucia Luo says she wants to know more about the companies, and plans to apply for a job on the last day of the fair. Third-year economics major David Choi believes  the fair will help him make better career choices in the future.
