The University of Macau (UM) has invited heads of three top Indian universities to visit the new campus, as part of its efforts to implement a new global strategy, one component of which is to build meaningful and sustainable relationships with India’s soft infrastructures in order to benefit from the vast intellectual, cultural, as well as human resource potential of India, the world’s second most populous country in the world.

The three university heads who are expected to visit UM are Prof R K Shevgaonkar from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi; Prof Gautam Biswas from the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati; and Prof Pradipta Banerji from the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.

“India is a massive nation in the world with a profound humanistic and scientific heritage. Ever since CBS in the United States reported in 2003 about the India Institute of Technology (IIT), the world not only had a glimpse of the country’s human resource prowess, it can now focus on it,” says UM Rector Wei Zhao.

“For UM to become a globally recognised research university, we will need the participation of top global talent. It is for this reason that we have made it part of our ambitious global strategy to open up dialogues with our counterparts in India, in the fields of science, technology, and the humanities. As a first step, we have invited three IIT directors to come to UM, so that we could establish in-depth contact with them and to initiate meaningful and long-term collaborations in scientific, technological and managerial arenas.” Rector Zhao says.

Echoing Rector Zhao’s enthusiasm, Prof Da-Hsuan Feng, director of the Global Affairs Office and special assistant to the rector, says: “Macao, as part of Greater China, is entrenched in Chinese heritage and culture. In addition, with over 400 years of Portuguese connection, it is also endowed with a rich and robust European culture.”

With the new state-of-the-art campus, UM plans to carry out world-class research in a wide range of disciplines, and UM hopes that the visit from the three outstanding universities in India can help to accelerate its implementation of the new global strategy.
