The project“A Specific Quality Control Method Based on the Characteristics of Natural Cordyceps Sinensis”proposed by the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) of the University of Macau (UM) was granted the China invention patent (No.: ZL 200710019225.1) by the State Intellectual Property Office, China. The researchers responsible for this project are Associate Professor Shaoping Li from ICMS and his PhD student Fengqing Yang.

Cordyceps sinensis is a composite made up of fungus’ stromata, parasitizing on the larva of some insect species and dead caterpillar, which is a valuable traditional Chinese herbal medicine. Researchers have long been dedicated in seeking substitutes for Cordyceps sinensis but there are few researches on natural Cordyceps sinensis. Despite of the fact that the products of artificial Cordyceps sinensis are unlike the natural one, nowadays, Cordyceps sinensis mycelial fermentation are widely used as medical health products, and having a very high potential in the market. Meanwhile the research on natural Cordyceps sinensis can facilitate the advancement of quality of the artificial one.

Professor Shaoping Li has devoted in the research of the quality control of Cordyceps sinensis for decades. He is a leading figure in the research of quality control of Cordyceps sinensis. In recent years, Prof. Li has been committed in artificial cultured Cordyceps sinensis products with the features of natural Cordyceps sinensis. The research effort has facilitated the development of health industry in Macao as well. With the financial support from Macau Science and Technology Development Fund and the Research Committee of the University, Prof. Li and his Ph.D student Fengqing Yang conducted the research on the characteristics of natural Cordyceps sinensis. The research has resulted in the revelation of chemical characteristics of natural Cordyceps sinensis, thus establishing a newly developed specific quality control method.

The granted patent marks a substantial step that UM has taken in developing artificial cultured Cordyceps sinensis for the health industry of Macao.
