The University of Macau (UM) recently held the Principals’ Recommended Admission Talk 2015/2016 to promote its educational mission, academic programmes, exchange opportunities, and career prospects to prospective students.

The event was co-organised by UM’s Registry, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Honours College, and the eight residential colleges. The event attracted about 500 secondary school graduating students and their parents and teachers, with an increase by 25% of visitors over last academic year. All the faculties and colleges sent faculty members and staff representatives to attend the admission talk to provide information about UM’s academic programmes and answer the students’ questions.

The talk was presented by UM Vice Rector (Students Affairs) Prof Haydn Chen. He told participants about UM’s recent achievements in various areas, as well as international recognition of some of UM’s degree programmes. Prof Chen also mentioned that UM started implementing the residential college (RC) system in the 2014/2015 academic year to facilitate community and peer education. The RCs have their core educational objective, which is to help students meet the requirements in the five Areas of Competencies—Interpersonal Relation and Teamwork, Global Citizenship, Leadership and Service, Cultural Engagement, and Healthy Living, so that students can focus on their studies and achieve their full potential.

During the event, students visited the teaching facilities and laboratories located in the faculty buildings and tried some of the specialised facilities, including the Simultaneous Interpretation Laboratory, the Black-Box Theatre, and the Moot Court. They were also given the opportunity to operate lab equipment under expert guidance. The activities increased the students’ understanding of and interest in UM’s programmes. Many students and parents also visited Shiu Pong College to experience its pluralistic community and facilities.

The Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences programme will be transferred to the Faculty of Health Sciences, effective from the 2015/2016 academic year.
