Members of Pearl Jubilee College book production team led by College Tutor Chen
Fei have assisted staff and students from both University of Macau and Lingnan
University in Hong Kong in the publication of a highly original and beatifully
produced book called Between. Students from Lingnan
University under the guidance of Dr Carol Archer painted a range of original
creative postcards which they sent from Hong Kong. University of Macau creative
writing students responded with haiku poems. These haiku were then translated
into six different languages by students and staff of UM: English, Putonghua,
Portuguese, French, Indonesian and Japanese. Prof Kit Kelen from the UM English
Department and Senior Fellow of Pearl Jubilee College was responsible for
advising students on the literary output and the translations. The title
Between has special significance since it refers to the number of
cooperative enterprises needed to produce this highly unique book: interaction
between students in visual art and creative writing classes; cooperation between
staff and students of two universities; communication between poets and several
translators; reciprocal invention between creative writers and creative artists.
The project involved a large number of contributors and demonstrates the power
of collaboration and creativity, and shows the residential college community can
contribute to complex projects of all kinds. The book itself is part of a larger
and ongoing project which PJC also hopes to play a part.
