As part of the celebrations of the Month of Brazil in China (September 2013), which is organised under the 2010-2014 Joint Action Plan adopted by the governments of the Federative Republic of Brazil and the People’s Republic of China, the University of Macau (UM) Department of Portuguese will hold the II Brazilian Week at UM from 23 September to 27 September, with the support of UM and the Consulate General of Brazil in Hong Kong and Macao. With focus on the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, the event will include workshops and lectures on Brazilian literature, cinema and music. Participants will have the opportunity to attend classes in Coco de Roda, a popular style of dance from the state of Pernambuco, and to create their own cordel stories (a typical literary genre from the same state) in a workshop offered by one of the guests. There will be talks on Brazilian literature, with focus on some Brazilian writers from the northeastern region of the country, where the state of Pernambuco is located. There will also be movie screening, exhibitions and the opportunity to talk face-to-face with some contemporary Brazilian writers during a literary café. The Brazilian Week will also support the publication of The Declaration of Recife, an important historical document written by the Brazilian linguist Francisco Gomes de Matos, which served as a basis for the implementation of the Universal Declaration of Linguistic Rights.
