To nurture well-rounded graduates, the University of Macau (UM) has launched two new degree programmes in the new academic year in keeping with the global trends. The two new programmes are the Doctor of Philosophy (Biomedicine) Programme (Molecular Biology and Biomedicine), and the Bachelor of Science in Accounting Programme (Accounting and Information Systems).

Ever since the discovery of DNA structure in 1953 by Watson and Crick, molecular biology has been the foundation of modern biological and biomedical sciences for decades and will continue to be the fundamental subject for all fields of life sciences and medicine. The PhD Programme in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine offered by UM’s Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) boasts state-of-the-art facilities and world-class faculty comprised of academics and researchers from well-known universities and institutions, including the National Institutes of Health in the United States, the University of Cambridge, Harvard University, the University of Texas, the University of Connecticut, the Johns Hopkins University, and the National University of Singapore. The programme aims to develop FHS into a regional centre for teaching and research with international reputation in modern biological and biomedical sciences, as well as to nurture high-calibre research talent for Macao and the Pearl River Delta region. Students of the programme will not only receive first-class training, but will also serve as the major workforce for cutting-edge research projects in health sciences and related fields.

Accounting is also one of the most popular programmes in the world. To equip the students with knowledge of both accounting and information systems so that they can better adapt to the ever-changing banking and finance sectors, UM’s Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) has upgraded the original e-business programme into the current Bachelor Programme in Accounting and Information Systems. FBA expects to admit approximately 40 students for this programme every year. Students who have enrolled for the Bachelor of Science in Accounting Programme may select the Professional Accountancy stream or the Accounting and Information Systems stream in the second semester of the second year.

Students of the Bachelor Programme in Accounting and Information Systems will be able to attend more accounting-related courses as well as courses in information systems and the establishment of business information systems, and when they graduate they will be exempted from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants examinations in seven subjects. The programme was originally named Business Information Systems, and was later renamed e-Business after curriculum adjustments. This latest upgrading to Accounting and Information Systems represents FBA’s efforts to constantly improve the quality of its academic programmes to better serve the students.
