The Fourth Workshop on Numerical Algebra and High Performance Computation was held at the University of Macau (UM) in mid-December. Prof Hayden Chen, vice rector (student sffairs) of UM, shared with participants the latest progress of the university and the new campus on Hengqin Island. He also envisioned UM’s future development and expressed his thanks to all the experts and scholars for attending the workshop.

The previous three workshops were held in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong respectively. This year’s workshop was hosted by UM’s Department of Mathematics. 30 scholars and experts from around the world, including mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Japan, and the United States, were invited as speakers at the workshop. They included Prof Zhongci Shi, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Prof Hongkun Xu from the Sun Yat-sen University, Taiwan, who is a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa and the Third World Academy of Sciences; Prof  Tao Tang from Hong Kong Baptist University, who is a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and recipient of the Feng Kang Prize of Scientific Computing; Prof Zhongzhi Bai from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who is also a recipient of the Feng Kang Prize of Scientific Computing; and Prof Xiaoping Wang from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, who is also a recipient of the Feng Kang Prize of Scientific Computing. Dr Hu Guanghui and Dr Liu Zhi from UM also presented their research at the workshop.

Participating experts and scholars considered the workshop a great success, saying that it provided a high-quality platform for participants to exchange ideas on the development of computational mathematics in the Greater China region. Proceedings of the workshop will be published as a special issue by a SCI-indexed journal East Asian Journal on Applied Mathematics.
