Dr. Antonio Correia e Silva, minister of higher education, science and innovation of Cape Verde, yesterday visited the University of Macau (UM) and met with UM Rector Wei Zhao and Vice Rector (Research) Rui Martins. During his visit Dr. Antonio Silva also gave a lecture titled, “The Man and the Sea—Opportunities and Challenges for Development”, which is part of the Distinguished Diplomatic & Consular Speakers Series 2012. 

A Cape Verde delegation led by Dr. Antonio Silva yesterday visited UM, and was warmly received by UM Rector Wei Zhao and Vice Rector (Research) Rui Martins. Wei Zhao shared his vision of the future development of UM and the master plan for the new campus. Afterwards, both sides exchanged ideas on a range of issues, including the social condition and education in Cape Verde and Macao, and discussed opportunities for future cooperation and exchange. 

The delegation consisted of Dr. Júlio Morais, Cape Verde ambassador to the People’s Republic of China; Ms. Rita Santos, deputy secretary general of the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese Speaking Countries; Dr. Paulino Fortes, rector of the University of Cape Verde; Dr. Jorge Sousa Brito, rector of the University of Jean Piaget; Dr. Albertino Graca, rector of the University of Mindelo; Dr. Paulino Monteiro, director general of planning, budgeting and management of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation; and Dr. Mario Barbosa Vicente, delegate of Cape Verde to the Permanent Secretariat of the Sino-Portuguese Forum. 

Dr. Antonio Silva was the rector of the University of Cape Verde, cultural counselor to the president of the Republic of Cape Verde, and member of the Luso-Cape Verdean Team for drafting the general history of Cape Verde. During his lecture, “The Man and the Sea- Opportunities and Challenges for Development”, he discussed the history and development process of Cape Verde as well as the importance of the ports to the country.
