Postgraduate students of the University of Macau (UM) will host an interdisciplinary Graduate Conference on “Culture and Identity in Times of Change”, from 23 to 25 February 2012, to share research findings in the humanities and social sciences among young scholars from the Greater Pearl River Delta region. The objective of the conference, which is part of a series of UM-organized academic events for February and March, is to provide a platform for young scholars in the region to exchange ideas. The conference will be conducted in English and Chinese, and will cover a wide range of disciplines, including communications, cultural studies, history, international relations, linguistics, literature, psychology, sociology, translation, tourism and women studies.

The conference will feature three distinguished key plenary speakers, Prof. Richard Xiao, from Edge Hill University, U.K.; Prof. Elaine Y.L. Ho from the University of Hong Kong; and Prof. Tim Simpson from UM; as well as one guest speaker, Prof. Susan Bassnett from the University of Warwick.

Prof. Richard Xiao will open the conference by sharing his expertise on "Corpus-based Translation Studies: The Case of Translational Chinese in English-Chinese Translation".

Prof. Elaine Y.L. Ho will share her perspective on "Literary Study in a Changing World" on the second day.

Prof. Tim Simpson will close the conference by sharing his latest research on “Tourist Utopias: Las Vegas, Dubai, Macau".

Over the three days there will be forty parallel presentations by postgraduate students from different places, including mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao.
