Participants make models at the Civil Engineering Summer Camp 2011

The Civil Engineering Summer Camp, organized by the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) and the East Asia College of the University of Macau (UM) and sponsored by the Science and Technology Development Fund of Macao SAR, has ended. A total of thirty-six high school students participated in the summer camp. Participants described the summer camp as very meaningful and looked forward to more similar activities in the future.

The summer camp featured three themes: control and management of light rail, structural engineering and geotechnical engineering. The camp arranged for the participants to live in the East Asia Hall for two nights, thus enabling them to experience the benefits of a residential college and helping them understand better about the large-scale infrastructures and civil engineering in Macao.

The organizer invited a representative from the Transportation Infrastructure Office of Macao SAR to deliver a keynote speech on Macau Light Rail Transit during the summer camp. Students were shown the model of the planned Light Rail Transit Stations, and they were also given an opportunity to try designing the carriages of the Light Rail Transit System. Two project managers from the Infrastructure Development Office (GDI) of Macao SAR were also invited to the camp to talk about the construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge as well as the latest developments of some large-scale ongoing projects in Macao. During the camp, FST professor delivered lectures on geotechnical engineering-related topics and gave the participants a chance to make their own soft subsoil improvement models.

The three-day summer camp enabled the participants to have a deeper understanding about civil engineering and enhanced their interests in this field. Participants described the summer camp as very meaningful and looked forward to more similar activities in the future.
