The University of Macau (UM) has nurtured many graduates with outstanding achievements in various fields, and Mr. Anthony Lau, a recognized leader of the logistics world, is one of them. Not only has Mr. Lau attained impressive achievements in his career, but also he has set an inspiring example to all UM members with his untiring enthusiasm for learning and his commitment to supporting the development of his alma mater. Lately, Mr. Lau passed the viva examination and will be conferred his PhD from Edinburgh Napier University, UK, on 21st October 2010. Anthony’s Doctoral Thesis is entitled “An Analysis of the Challenges and Opportunities Facing the Hong Kong Logistics Industry”.

UM Rector Wei Zhao said that Mr. Lau’s commitment to supporting UM’s development sets a shining example to all UM members, and so does his unquenchable thirst for knowledge that has led him to embrace a path of lifelong learning. Edinburgh Napier University Professor of Economics John Adams who was Mr. Lau’s PhD supervisor highly praised Mr. Lau, saying that he was very impressed with Mr. Lau’s diligence in study. Mr. Lau is a staunch believer in the proverb: There is no end to learning. He holds that learning can improve one’s wisdom and abilities so that he or she can better serve the society. He also said that he was very impressed with the achievements UM has attained over the years and would continue to support the University’s development in the future.

Donations from the alumni have played an important role in building a prosperous society and in driving the University’s pursuit of excellence. On the 25th anniversary of UM, Mr. Lau donated HKD one million to support the University’s endeavour to improve its teaching and research. In appreciation of his generous donation, UM renamed the multi-purpose exhibition hall in the University Library the “Anthony S.W. Lau Exhibition Hall”. Over the years Mr. Lau has been closely following UM’s development. He once served as Chair of the University of Macau (Hong Kong) Alumni Association and took active part in various activities aimed at strengthening the bond among the University’s Hong Kong alumni.

In 1990 Mr. Lau received his MBA from the University of East Asia (the predecessor of UM). In 1982 he founded BALtrans Logistics Limited which ten years later became the first logistics company to be listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (SEHK). At the height of its success, BALtrans had an extensive network of its own offices in 65 cities across Asia, North America, Europe, the Middle East, and South Africa. In the first Logistics Awards Hong Kong 2005, Anthony Lau received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Hong Kong SAR Government. In 2006, BALtrans, under Mr. Lau’s stewardship, received the International Award of DHL/SCMP Hong Kong Business Award. In 2007 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award in the Asian Freight and Supply Chain Awards. Last year he was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong SAR Government in recognition of his contributions to the logistics industry.
