A book titled ‘Love and Trade War—China and the US in Historical Context’, co-authored by Prof Edmund Sheng Li and postdoctoral fellow Dr Dmitri Felix do Nascimento in the Department of Government and Public Administration, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Macau (UM), has been published by the authoritative international academic publisher Palgrave Macmillan. The book provides examples of trade wars in history, explores the internal dynamics that may lead to conflicts between great powers, and offers policies for how large and small nations can navigate through conflicts in the new era.
The study of trade wars has emerged in recent years in the social sciences and humanities because of the negative impact of the tensions in the Sino-US relations. Prof Sheng and Dr Nascimento put the trade war between the two countries in a historical context. They draw upon the history of China’s years of isolation prior to the famous Nixon-Mao summit and explore the dynamics of isolation and internal reform from a Chinese perspective, advocating that internal reform is a more productive strategy than conflict with other countries.
Love and Trade War–China and the U.S. in Historical Context provides a summary of the history of the Sino-US trade war and makes a dialectical consideration of this trade war. The book also discusses the geopolitics in the trade war and its impact on international relations. Filled with powerful arguments for globalisation with Chinese characteristics, the book has aroused a great deal of interest among scholars of China studies, economists, and political scientists.
