The Global Affairs Office (GAO) of the University of Macau (UM) recently held the Welcome Orientation for International Students for the Academic Year 2022/2023. Over 80 international students from 25 countries participated in the event.
As an international public comprehensive university, UM has been offering a wide range of incentives over the years to attract outstanding students from around the world. International students studying at undergraduate or postgraduate level at UM are eligible to apply for the International Student Scholarship offered by the university, which includes tuition fee waivers and accommodation fee waivers and has attracted students from countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Japan, and South Korea.
Rui Martins, vice rector of UM, kicked off the orientation with a welcoming remark. He stated that the event was the first on-campus orientation for international students since the outbreak of COVID-19. According to him, the past two academic years have been a difficult time, particularly for international students who were not able to return to Macao and had to study online. He highly praised the international students for their resilience and commitment. He also expressed hope that the students would make full use of the resources and facilities on campus and enjoy the atmosphere of the university as well as their lives in Macao.
At the event, Wang Ruibing, director of the GAO, told the students about the current development of UM as well as the scope of responsibilities of the GAO. He also encouraged the students to actively participate in activities and join exchange programmes at UM. Some international students expressed their excitement about returning to the UM campus and said they would make the most of their time at the university.
The orientation was also joined by representatives of the UM Library and the Student Affairs Office (SAO). Billy Leung, assistant librarian, and Wong Mek, functional head of the SAO, told the students about the library’s resources and the psychological counselling services available to students, respectively. Representatives of the International Students’ Association of the UM Students’ Union also took the opportunity to introduce students to the activities organised by the association and its operation. Guests who attended the event also included Rose Lai, dean of Honours College; Wong Pak Kin, interim dean of Graduate School; Paul Pang, dean of students; and Cindy Lam, director of the Alumni and Development Office.
