Zhang Yuwei, a third-year student in the Department of Computer and Information Science, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), University of Macau (UM), has developed an automated algorithm for the detection of Covid-19. This method can reduce the burden on frontline medical staff by obtaining test results with less manpower and at a faster rate.
Under the instruction of Zhang Yibo Bob, an associate professor in the department, Zhang developed a model based on a hierarchical structure, consisting of two stages: a segmentation stage followed by a classification stage. Experimental results show that her proposed hierarchical detection method has achieved satisfactory results in accurately separating CT scans of Covid-19 from CT scans of common pneumonia at the scanning level, indicating that the method has great potential in assisting physicians and radiologists in rapid COVID-19 detection, which will significantly reduce their workload. In particular, the proposed algorithm is at least 20 times faster than manual inspection scans, further proving its effectiveness and efficiency.
This work has been submitted and accepted by the International Conference on Big Data and Artificial Intelligence 2021, which will take place at the Ocean University of China in Qingdao.
