Lam Chi Seng, an assistant professor from the University of Macau (UM) State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI; and Thomas Cheang, a UM graduate electrical and electronics engineering and a veteran engineer from Macao, recently received the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power and Energy Society (PES) Outstanding Engineer Award 2016. This is the first time that engineers from Macao have received this award. There is a consensus in the industry that the award can help the recipients from the fields of electricity and energy in Macao to develop their careers in other parts of the world. In addition, Lam and Cheang have been invited to join the evaluation committee in the Macao region for the IEEE PES Outstanding Engineer Award 2017.
Established in 1994, the IEEE PES Engineer Award recognises individuals with significant achievements or contributions to electrical engineering in technology, leadership, community, or education. Each year, the evaluation committee selects a number of candidates through a rigorous evaluation process based on their contributions to the above areas.
Lam has served as an electrical engineer for environmental protection and energy saving at UM, and a postdoctoral researcher at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He received many research awards and holds four patents, two in the United States and two in China. The power quality compensator developed by his team has already been put into use.
Cheang is a veteran engineer from Companhia de Electricidade de Macau. He is also a member and chartered engineer of many professional and academic groups in the United Kingdom, China, and Macao. He has been invited by various organisations to speak on electrical engineering, power-system protection, electric power quality, ethnics, and the training of chartered engineers.
