It’s the start of a new semester! If you are new to UM, you should n’t miss this article, in which various faculty deans, college masters, and administrative heads provide useful information and advice that will help you make the most of your time here. Even if you are a current UM student returning from a holiday, you will probably still be able to gain a few useful tips from the article. So read on and hear what they have to tell you.

Prof Hong Gang Jin: “The programmes offered by our faculty aim to help students develop cross-cultural and cross-lingual communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills. As a college student, you will enjoy greater freedom than before, but it is my hope that you will take responsibility for your studies, your life, your behaviour, and your choices.

Dear students, I have some advice for you. 1. A good command of the English language is a must if you want to successfully complete your studies here. 2. Study smart and find a strategy that works for you. 3. Explore your interests. Don’t be afraid to take risks and make mistakes. Attend classes you’ve never attended before, classes you know nothing about, and classes you are not sure you can handle. 4. Make lots of friends in college, because they may become your lifelong friends or business partners in the future.”

Prof Mok Kai Meng: “Every year we select about 50 outstanding students from the seven faculties. We provide these students with well-designed leadership training programmes, with English and Portuguese courses in the first year to prepare them for overseas studies in the second year.

Our students come from different faculties and backgrounds, which helps to create a multi-disciplinary learning environment that is conducive to the development of communication skills and interpersonal skills. HC graduates enjoy rosy career prospects. Last year, six of our graduates were admitted into the training course and traineeship for judicial magistrates and public prosecutors in Macao, accounting for over 40 per cent of all the eligible candidates. If you want to join the HC, you should start preparing in the first year. In addition to requiring a minimum GPA of 3.3, we also consider other factors, such as whether you are an active participant in extracurricular activities on campus.”

Prof George Watt: “What your university professors expect of you is very different from what your high school teachers expected of you. At first you may have some difficulty adjusting to your new role, but the residential colleges will do their best to help you during this transitional period.

Every RC has many people to help you: the master and associate master, resident fellows, College Office, and, most importantly, student leaders on the floor and the College House Association. All academic staff and student leaders live inthe college and are happy to help you solve any problems you may have and provide useful suggestions for you. An RC provides a safe environment in which you can try different things, whether you are good at them or not. It also allows you to develop teamwork skills and leadership skills and make more friends. Each RC provides various opportunities for college members to serve each other and discover their talents and interests. We also encourage students to establish new student associations.”

Prof Mo Shi Jian: “Our university provides abundant learning resources and a variety of facilities. For example, our well-stocked library is a great place for study. I encourage you to take full advantage of these resources to achieve optimum learning outcomes. Work hard and challenge yourself. Try to get the most out of the limited time you have here.

As a graduate student, you will need to spend a lot of time conducting research independently. You must learn to be an independent thinker and a self-motivated learner. The Graduate School is responsible for the management, development, and evaluation of graduate education throughout the university. We also provide various services to students. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.”

Prof Yuen Ka Veng: “UM implements a unique ‘4-in-1’ model of education, which includes education inside the classroom (discipline-specific education and general education), and education outside of the classroom (research and internship education, and community and peer education). We have an excellent student-to-faculty ratio and we have devoted a lot of resources. So our undergraduate students have many opportunities to work as interns, study overseas, and participate in scientific research, even in their first year of study.

I encourage you to talk to your professors and senior students on a regular basis, because you never know what you will learn from such interactions.”

My advice to you is that do well in your studies, but also take time to participate in extracurricular activities so you can discover your potential and achieve your dreams you may not even know existed.”
