The University of Macau’s (UM) Moon Chun Memorial College recently organised a Distinguished Lecture Series. The internationally-recognised paediatrician Prof. Leung Nai Kong and the veteran artist Mrs. Olivia Leung Wu Kwai Man gave a lecture entitled “Our Journey from Medicine to Arts” to over 100 students.
The evening began as the platform party processed to the Monteverdi Vespers and finished with an impromptu performance of well-known Cantonese songs. Students were engrossed by the talk and asked a lot of questions in response on medicine and the Cantonese opera. Prof. Leung Nai Kong presented the prize to winners of the Third Paper Plane Flying Competition.
Prof. Leung Nai Kong and Mrs. Olivia Leung also visited the news campus in the company of College Master Prof. Kevin Thompson, Dr. Patricia Thompson, Dr. Samuel Choi, and Dr. Ray Cheung. They also met with UM’s University Council Chair Dr. Tse Chi Wai and UM Rector Wei Zhao.
Prof. Leung Nai Kong has had a seminal influence on the quality of child health and welfare, education, and the arts. He was the chairman of the Council of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts from 2006 to 2009. His rich experience in governance and management has accrued through his participation in an array of public and community services. He chaired the Council of the Aids Trust Fund and the Supplementary Medical Professions Council, and was an advisor to the World Health Organisation. In the field of child welfare, he chairs the Child Fatality Review Panel of the Social Welfare Department. In addition, he is actively involved in the work of many voluntary organisations including the SAHK, the Hong Kong Red Cross, the Children’s Cancer Foundation, and the We Care Education Fund, providing services to the disadvantaged as well as people with illnesses and disabilities.
Mrs. Olivia Leung trained as a nurse in Hong Kong and London. Today she is a veteran artist, specialising in Chinese paintings, particularly paintings on animals, flowers and landscape. Her solo exhibitions have raised funds to support the Arts with the Disabled.
