Students'Site Inspection to Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Centre and Hengqin Island
Date: 19 June, 2009
To give students a clear picture of the environment of the proposed Hengqin Campus, SAS of UM organized a field-study trip to Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Centre and Hengqin Island on 18 June 2009. Nearly 100 students participated in this trip. The first destination is the proposed Hengqin Campus site and the second destination is the South China University of Technology (SCUT) located inside Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Centre in Panyu District. SCUT covers an area of 1677mu (around 1,111,889 m2). Students visited the university's sports facilities, dorm buildings, library, music hall, classrooms and recreational areas. It was scorching hot but it didn't dampen the students' high spirit. The beautiful green environment and the advanced teaching buildings left a deep impression on everybody.

Below are some students' post-trip feelings and suggestions on the Hengqin Campus as well as some pictures and video footage highlights.
Comments from Sudents
Zhai Shu, graduate student from the Faculty of Business Administration "There is no fencing in SCUT, which makes you feel free. The university is like a big community with a complete set of facilities. Hengqin is near Macao, so commute shouldn't be a problem. Also the environment is good and the site is big. I believe once completed UM Hengqin Campus can beat SCUT campus." |
Jiang Sheng, graduate student from the Department of Computer and Information Science, Faculty of Science and Technology "I hope in the near future we can have a new Hengqin Campus as big and distinctive as SCUT campus. I'm deeply impressed with the rich academic atmosphere of SCUT's library. The current UM campus and library are relatively small without a sufficiently conducive atmosphere for studying. But I believe in the near future we can do better in this respect." |
Kou Sut Chi, junior student majoring in English from the Faculty of Education "Today we went to see the proposed new campus site. Actually it is not very big compared with SCUT campus. Maybe UM's Hengqin Campus cannot have as many teaching buildings and diverse facilities as SCUT, but I hope it will be big enough to accommodate 10,000 students with various facilities like stadium, academic hall, music hall, etc. I also hope our future campus can have a large building to serve as Students Activities centre where we can hold cultural, academic, art and sports activities." |
Wang Wei, graduate student majoring in Economic and Commercial Law, Faculty of Law "This trip gives us a complete picture of the university, but I think SCUT's buildings fail to embody traditional Chinese cultural elements, while UM excels in this respect. Macao is a rich blend of Chinese and western culture, so I think the architectural style of UM Hengqin Campus should also integrate a mix of Chinese and Portugese cultural characteristics." |
Wang Zhao Hui, sophomore student from the Faculty of Business Administration "I think UM should draw on the strengths of other universities to improve the campus planning and construction. If UM is to relocate to Hengqin, then we want to do something to help UM build a beautiful new campus. We deeply care about UM's future development and want to make our share of contributions, but so far we don't have a clear clue about what we can do." |
Wang Xiaolong, sophomore student from the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities "Space and people are inextricable elements of any university. I am wondering if it's possible for UM to build an observatory so that we can look at the vast outer space with telescopes. I also hope in the future every student can have their own mail boxes and multi-functional student cards. I think UM should design every corner of the new campus in such a way as to allow students to show their talents to the fullest. Also, I think maybe the current campus can be used as an outward bound training centre for UM students." |
Nopporn Hemman: graduate student majoring in E-commerce Technology from the Faculty of Science and Technology "If UM can have a bigger campus, what's of particular interest to me is how UM plans to effectively manage everything so as to support students' activities and satisfy everyone's needs. Personally I think it's a good thing to have a bigger campus, but it won't be necessary to have a campus as big as SCUT." |
