Education Sector's Field Trip to UM's New Campus Site
Date: 09 July, 2009
On 9 July 2009 representatives of the Education Sector led by Vice Rector Dr. Alex Lai and Registrar Paul Pang went on a field trip to UM's new campus site in order to gain a clear picture of UM's future development plans as well as the new campus's design plan and geographical surroundings.
-
Before the trip Rector Wei Zhao made a brief introduction to UM's educational ideals as well as development strategies and plans for the new campus. During the field trip, Dr. Alex Lai explained in detail the new campus's 'people-oriented' design philosophy, residential college system, teaching facilities, as well as the layout of scientific research bases and various functional zones. The field-study group demonstrated great interest in UM's educational values and residential college system. The general feeling was that the new campus would usher in a brand new era for Macao's education development and become a new cradle for nurturing outstanding talents for Macao.

Below are some pictures and video highlights as well as group members' post-trip feelings and suggestions on the new campus.
Suggestions clipped from Education Sector
Cheong Ngai, Principal of the Escola De Danca Do Conservatorio De Macau "Actually a lot of local middle school graduates are interested in studying arts, unfortunately, at present no university in Macao has the faculty of arts. I wonder if UM can consider setting up such a faculty on the new campus to attract students from Macao, Mainland and abroad." |
|
Koc Va Pong, Vice Principal of Colegio Diocesano de Sao Jose, 4a Escola "There is widespread support among the local Education Sector for UM's new campus. If Macao can have a university with relatively complete facilities and programmes, it will be a blessing for local students and educational development. I suggest that UM hold presentations in middle schools and directly explain the new campus's educational values and plans to the students." |
|
Man Kuan, Principal of the Workers' Children High School, Macau "Of course I'm very happy that the Central Government has decided to lease such a large piece of land to UM for construction of its new campus. The conceptual design plan for the new campus is very good and the environment is also better than that of the current campus, I believe these will help improve the teaching quality, which will be a blessing for students. The current campus fails to offer students a real on-campus life experience, which I believe will change in the future upon completion of the new campus, especially with the residential college system put in place which will help enhance communication among students and enable them to experience real on-campus life." |
|
Kou Kam Fai, Principal of Pui Ching Middle School "The environment is very good, and the natural sceneries are beautiful. The new campus will surpass the current one in many ways, but after the hardware facilities have been improved, UM should consider how to improve the software' aspects, for instance, how to improve faculty quality and add more disciplines." |
|
Lau Daat Lam, teacher from Colegio de Santa Rosa de Lima - Seccao Inglesa. "I did not know it was such a short distance away from Macao until I came here today. For a long time, most middle school graduates in Macao choose to pursue further study elsewhere mainly due to the lack of on-campus life and residential college system in local universities. Now UM has such a wonderful opportunity to improve the campus environment and teaching facilities, in the future when we do counselling for graduates we would recommend that they choose UM." |
