Magic dream come true

By Cynthia Lau

Many people play magic just as a hobby, but what will happen if they find themselves falling in love with magic gradually and even want to take it as a lifelong career? Is it an awesome job to be a professional magician? Would you be happy if you are able to realize your dream of having a lifelong magician career? Unfortunately, a lot of people can only regard magic as an amateur hobby, playing magic in their spare time. Magic only becomes an ornament in their life.

Jay Lu, a 31-year-old magician from Taiwan, now works in the Venetian Macao. His job mainly focuses on stage magic performance and close-up magic performance with tourists. So far, he has been working for eight years, earning around MOP30,000 per month.

From amateur hobby to professional career
Jay became addicted to magic when he was in middle school. Once he met his magic teacher and became an assistant in his commercial performance. "I saw my teacher earn about NTD4,000-6,000 after his magic performance. I thought that I could earn money from performing magic tricks, so I decided to become a magician," Jay said. "In the past, I usually gave a magic performance at people's weddings and temple fairs. At the peak, there were 30-40 magic shows per day."

As a professional magician, Jay thought it's hard to be a successful professional magician because you have to get out of your comfort zone and move forward without any worries. Jay added, "When I first came to Macao alone from Taiwan, I was really poor, and my parents didn't support me to be a magician, but I still wanted to try it out." In addition, having a good connection with people and being an amiable person are very important, which are the key factors for a magician to find more performance opportunities.

'Magic is an art requiring a lot of money'
Macao, as a tourism city, is very suitable for the development of performance industry so as to attract more tourists to visit Macao. But Macao is too small in space. If you want to develop a magic performance, you need to consider whether you have enough space to store your magic props, Jay said. "Magic is an art requiring a lot of money, so if you want to be a magician in Macao, unless you have a lot of money, otherwise you have to practice harder on your magic skills. Once your magic skills become very good, people will be looking for you to perform magic shows."

Let's enjoy the show
About the commercial magic performance, Jay said his boss asked him not to perform the same magic trick on stage every time because guests would be bored. Therefore, Jay would prepare more magic performances, which would be combined with popular topics or timely events, such as a magic show about love on Valentine's day. Jay added, "The main thing is that the audience enjoys my magic performance, I will be very happy too."

'When you get old, what can you leave?'
"The dream will not be realized in your heart, if you have one, just do it," Jay said. "My teacher told me a sentence which is 'when you get old, what can you leave?' I don't want my life to be wasted, I want to tell my future generations that I have worked hard for my dream and now my dream has come true."
