1999 marked the year of handover of Macau to China. It was the same year when the University of Macau (UM)'s former rector Dr. Iu Vai Pan was appointed to lead the university for the next nine years. His dedication and achievement in higher education was recognized by the media of Distinguished Service (Dedication) award by the Macau SAR.

2009, a decade later, the time came for another new leadership. The eighth rector, Zhao Wei, was recruited through an international competition, assumed duty after received Certificate of Installation from the Chancellor Mr. Ho Hau Wah on 10 November 2008.

As the new leader of UM, Zhao is confident that the future Macau chief executive will be our own UM graduates in 20 years. What gives him that confidence?

In this spring issue, UMAC Bridges got up-close and personal with two rectors. Reviewing Iu's contribution during his rectorship, as well as Zhao's plan to build the brand new future of UM.

The new rector, Dr. Zhao Wei received his MSc and PhD degrees at the University of Massachusetts in the U.S. He had then taught for several years and eventually landed himself a prestigious position as the Dean of the School Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York.
