Starting from October 1, 2006, add "6" when making calls to mobile numbers (7 digits) and add "28" when making calls to fix numbers (6 digits) in Macau. And starting from January 1, 2008, please add "8" when making calls to DDI (Direct Dial In) numbers (7 digits).

The new change is aimed to cope with the upcoming 3G communication services and an increasing demand for phone numbers, both for fixed and mobile services, as a result of a booming local economy.

There is an "Adapting Period" with the dual mode which starts from October 1, 2006 till February 28, 2007. During this period, people can use both new-added numbers and old numbers for 6-digit fix lines and 7-digit mobile phones. For 7-digit DDI users, the dual mode will start from January 1, 2008 till June 30, 2008.

The "Adapting Period" will end on March 1, 2007, and starting from that day, there will be voice messages to remind citizens that numbers for fix lines and mobiles have been upgraded.

All the phone numbers beginning with "1" or the numbers with just 3 or 4 digits such as "999", "1000", "181", etc. remain unchanged.
