Foundation. This move turned a new page of transformation for the University to become a public university.

During the transformation, UEA were divided into three educational institutes according to their academic disciplines. Thus, the Macau Polytechnic Institute, the Asia International Open University (Macau), and the University of Macau were established respectively.

In September 1991, UEA was successfully transformed into the University of Macau.

This one-to-three division also formed the framework of the fundamental structure of tertiary education in Macau at the time.

UM initiated higher education in Macau, contributing greatly to the development of Macau, and enlightening the vision of Macau citizens. It is now a public university comprising about 360 academic staff who come from different parts of the world and over 6000 students.

In addition, UM is also an active member of many international higher education associations like the International Association of Universities (IAU), Associação das Universidades de Língua Portuguesa (AULP), and Association of Universities of Asia and Pacific (AUAP).

Every year, UM carries out exchange programs with universities from over 20 different regions and countries, enforcing the relationships and nurturing cultural exchanges.

As one of the well-known universities in East Asia, UM has served and will continue to serve as a solid bridge connecting Macau with Asia and the world.
