A New Gaming Myth

by Rain Leong

Wynn Resort opened at the midnight of September 6

Beautiful and brilliant fireworks flashed in the dark sky. A new gaming myth began in Macau.

"I think the opening of Wynn may create a new business operation to Macau," said Jason Chow, a senior Macau local resident. "Moreover, I believe it also makes a big step toward Macau being an international city."

Nowadays, the gaming and tourist industries have taken the lead in Macau's economy. It seems that people have great expectations that Macau may develop to be the second "Las Vegas" with the coming completion of the different large-scale constructions. They contain Star World Hotel, MGM Grand Paradise, Golden Road and etc. This rapid and booming development will influence local citizens considerably either in their life or consumption style. It seems that there are still some advantages and disadvantages that can be brought out.

"Although the opening of Wynn can attract lots of tourists and improve the unemployment rate, it also brings lots of social problems, including the distribution of human resources, employment competition with other large-scale casinos, and traffic problems," said Karen Leong, a dealer working at the Sands Casino. Leong also mentioned that some of her colleagues had moved to Wynn because of higher salaries and better benefits. "However, our company had advocated the hiring of part time dealers at the very early period to deal with the shortage of manpower," she mentioned.

Actually, it cannot be denied that the Macau's labor market has been affected greatly. And the labor shortage has become more and more acute with large investments of the new large-scale enterprises. According the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), there has been a 47 per cent increase in job vacancies from 2005 to 2006.

"It's pretty difficult for us to employ workers since working in the casino is a well-paid job. Moreover, as Wynn Resort opened, lots of employees prefer being one of the gaming family members rather than staying here with a low salary," Liza Kong, a captain of Tung Yee Hin of Mandarin Oriental Hotel, commented. However, Kong also added that it may be a vicious competition regardless of the hotel, tourism or gaming industries.

Wynn resort opened at midnight September 5 with a great and glittery firework display. It is the first high-class and multiple-entertainment resort in Macau. In addition to a hotel and casino, it also provides various delicacies and specialty shops of well-known brands for the customers. They include Christian Dior, Giorgio Armani, Louis Vuitton and so on.
