E.S.KIMO Raises Price Again

Café E.S.KIMO, the campus canteen, once again raised the prices at the beginning of this semester. Adding to student's discontent, it also relocated its snack kiosk far from the central campus.

E.S.KIMO greeted students in the New Year with a new menu; the food prices, to the shock of many students, were increased by approximately 10 percent. For example, the most popular dish items like spicy beef rice, hot spicy pork rice and hot spicy chicken rice, which were MOP18 before the summer holiday, sell at MOP20 now. And, some food items have a new name but they are really the same old stuff except for the higher prices. For instance, the new cheese herb cream chicken is just the same as the old corn chicken rice, but costs two dollars more than before. There are some new items on the menu like braised eggplant Szechuan style rice and high quality soy sauce pork chop rice. But the quality of them is not very high. Despite this, there are still a lot of students going to the café for lunch and supper as they have no other choice of student canteen. The business of E.S.KIMO does not seem to be influenced by the price hike.

As the only canteen in the University of Macau, E.S.KIMO almost monopolizes the diet of the students. "The café keeps on raising the prices but never raises the quality of the service and the food," a student grumbled. This represents the opinion of most of the students and staff.

"This is the third time the café raised the prices," a student explained.

Students also feel inconvenienced by the new venue of the snack kiosk. The kiosk had been operating for some years and this is the third time it was relocated. Originally it was located at a corner of the Tai Fung Building, a sort of central place on the campus, surrounded by classroom buildings. And now it is located on the first floor of the new Jubilee Building. Although the J building provides a more comfortable environment for a snack corner, it is too far for many students who have classes in T, N and U buildings.

E.S.KIMO was the first café which brought special Taiwan-style drinks to Macau. It came to the university to run the student canteen in 2002. It is divided into two sections: the fast food area and the service area. The price of the fast food has not been raised for the moment.
