The Phenomena of "Cosmetic Surgery" in Taiwan and Macao
Joyce Choi -- Some of the Taiwanese students went to take the cosmetic surgery before graduating from schools. Central News Agency in Taipei, on September 28, reported that more and more fresh graduates went to take the cosmetic surgery, hoping to seek jobs more easily than the others in the labour market. According to China Times, the unemployment rate in Taiwan has increased to 500,000 people. Furthermore Central News Agency reported that the unemployment rate in Taiwan has been uplifting in recent years. Most of the students are afraid that they can't obtain a job for their livelihood. Therefore they plan to make this investment by saving money from their part-time or summer jobs. Central News Agency reported a case in Taiwan. A local university student paid a cosmetic surgeon over $100,000 to have her nose, eyebrows and the chin reshaped, so that she could be good-looking enough to face challenges in the marketplace. The amount of money was collected from her part-time jobs during two summers and winters. According to Central News Agency, Mr. Leung Wai Chung, the in-charge person of one of a cosmetic surgery centre in Taiwan, indicated that the above phenomena had not yet developed into an obvious trend in Taiwan. However, it was sure that a certain number of people admitted that it was easier for good-looking people to find jobs than the others. Although cosmetic surgery has already been a trend in Japan or even in Korea, people in Macao seem to be conservative in this fashion. Carol Leung, a year-four student at UM, said, "I could not accept this new trend since the employment situation in Macao relied more on personal relationship. It's not worth paying for this investment." Another fourth year student at UM, Yuri Cheang, emphasized that working ability was more important than good appearance, unless the job nature emphasized personal image, such as in the requirements for Receptionists or Public Relations people. Mandy Chiu, a year-three student at UM, said that there's risk when someone determines to take the reshaping surgery since s/he might not know whether the therapist had the professional qualifications. For the time being, only a local hospital, Conde de São Januario Hospital, provides plastic reconstructive surgery services for the public. Miss Lau, one of the nurses who is working in the plastic reconstructive surgery department in Conde de São Januario Hospital, explained that their department would only provide reshaping surgery for those people suffering from injuries made during accidents, such as burning, car accident and so on. Nowadays, the trend of cosmetic surgery is very popular in some Asian countries, such as Japan and Korea. Some graduate students in Macao had their own concept when they were being asked about this question. Of course, whether this beauty trend will become a fashion in Macao, it's too early to make a conclusion since no one can't predict what will happen in the future!
