Web Business in Macau

The Internet is going to be the middleman between Macau and other places.

To aid the people in Macau who are searching for information, Companhia de Telecomunicacoes de Macau (CTM), the only telecom company in Macau, launched the CTM Internet service in May 1995.

According to the statistics given by CTM, there are about 30,000 Internet users and 300 business web-site registries in Macau. That means, one in 16 persons is an Internet user.

Ringo Bi, the IT Director of MicroChina, indicated that everyone is talking about the Internet. This current trend is a very important reason why people are exploring business possibilities through a web-site.

"First, in Macau, using the Internet for business is not popular yet, but the market really needs this technological service. Second, there are still not many people who are developing web businesses in Macau, we decided to establish a web-site company," said Bi.

MicroChina is a new webpage company which was set up in October last year.

"On our homepage, we include second hand auctions, local and international news, weather, homepage design information, programming information, Macau business and government information, links with foreign homepages and Macau search engine services," he continued.

"Several years ago, if we wanted to search for data, we needed to browse Hong Kong or other foreign web-sites," Vong Hou Veng, the manager of Macau Newsnet Company said.

Macau Newsnet provides second hand market, making homepages, Macau's private group information, and business information services on their homepage.

"Moreover, there were only a few web-sites for Macau businesses. Newcomers find it hard to search for business information from the Internet. They have no idea how they can begin working. This may lead to the loss of trading tax income for the Macau government," Vong continued.

"Since we are just a small company, we can't compete with CTM. All we can do is to try our best to promote this business, to make more people interested in it and to let them have more chances to use it," Bi added.
