To enhance students’ awareness of environmental protection, the University of Macau’s (UM) Pearl Jubilee College (PJC) organised a visit to the Hong Kong Geopark for twenty-four PJC members.
PJC fellows and students visited different natural sites, including the Sha Chau, which are disappearing due to tidal changes; the Big Ben Whole (Sea Cave), which is caused by wave erosion; and the Hexagonal rock columns, which are formed by volcanic ash. The group also paid a visit to the St. Joseph’s Chapel, which has won the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award.
Before the trip Dr. Young Ng, an expert in earth science and chairman of the Association for Geoconservation, Hong Kong (AGHK), was invited to give a talk entitled “Hong Kong Geopark – the application of the nature in the city concept in a metropolis”. Through the talk and the site visit, participants learned more about the importance and necessity of environmental protection.
