Thomas Lim, an independent film maker from Singapore, recently gave a talk to University of Macau (UM) students on his first film Roulette City, which is set in Macao. Lim was one of the several film makers who have given talks at UM recently at the invitation of Prof. Tan See Kam from the Department of Communication, who hoped to help students know more about film making.
Roulette City, of which Lim is the director and lead actor, tells how ordinary people from mainland China get lost in the artificial glitter of the life in a city famous for its casinos and how they finally wake up to the cold reality. Lim said that he didn’t set out to make this film; he was simply struck by how people separated by a border gate could lead such distinctly different lives and felt it was worth exploring the underlying causes of such vast differences.
Lim told the students that film-making is about capturing what most people look at without seeing. He also disclosed his plan to make a horror film in Macao because he thinks many buildings in Macao have a distinctive character and could make excellent scenes for a horror film.
