Specially designed workshops featuring keynote speeches by the rector and vice rectors were held throughout the week. Other activities during the week included peer experience sharing sessions, briefing sessions on UM’s postgraduate regulations and guidelines, and a half-day guided tour of Macao.
The orientation week began with a warm welcome and a keynote speech by UM Rector Prof Wei Zhao, which was followed by speeches by Interim Vice Rector (Academic Affairs) Prof Fan Xitao, Vice Rector (Student Affairs) Prof Haydn Chen, and Vice Rector (Research) Prof Rui Martins. The rector and vice rectors shared their experience with the new students and provided some suggestions for making academic progress.
The half-day guided local tour was another highlight of the orientation week. To give students a better understanding of the culture and traditions of Macao, the Postgraduate House arranged for the students to visit some of the historical attractions in Macao, including the A-Ma Temple, the Ruins of St Paul, Na Tcha Temple, Taipa Houses Museum, and the Church of St Francis Xavier.
The
theme of this year’s academic orientation week was, “Creating a Culture of
Research on the Campus”. The Graduate School noted that the event emphasized
the importance of research culture to the students’ learning and postgraduate
life, and provided a better understanding and clear guidance to assist the new
postgraduate students to complete their studies.
