Li Shanshan, a member of the gold medal-winning Chinese women’s gymnastics team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, on 15 April gave a talk at the University of Macau (UM) Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College (HFPJC), about her career as a professional gymnast.

The talk opened with video clips showing Li’s training and participation in various competitions. Li shared with UM students about how she began training at the age of four, and how she became a professional athlete in the national team. She also talked about the highs and lows in her career, including the excitement she felt when winning the gold medal at the Olympics, the numerous setbacks she experienced such as falling off the uneven bars because of the small size of her hands, how she was twice turned away by the provincial team, and her battle with weight loss in her adolescence. She encouraged the students to pursue their dreams no matter how impossible they seem.
