The Forum on Biomedical and Brain Science Research, co-organised by the University of Macau (UM) and the University of Edinburgh, was held at UM recently. During the forum, faculty members from both universities shared their latest research results in the areas of biomedical sciences, public health, and brain science with experts, scholars, researchers, and students.Eminent scholars from the University of Edinburgh had an in-depth discussion on global health challenges. The forum aimed to strengthen academic exchange and collaboration between the two universities.

UM Rector Yonghua Song delivered a speech, in which he said that the forum would provide a platform for faculty members and researchers from both universities to exchange ideas and enrich their knowledge in biomedical and interdisciplinary research, adding that it would also help to identify more opportunities for collaboration between the two universities.

Two professors from the University of Edinburgh spoke at the forum. Prof Susan Welburn, professor of molecular epidemiology and executive dean of Zhejiang University-University of Edinburgh Institute, shared her insights on public health research and the importance of public health for neglected zoonoses. Prof Mike Shipton, dean of biomedical sciences and professor of physiology of the Edinburgh Medical School, discussed the challenges in the battle against neurological diseases.

Two UM professors, namely Prof Yuan Zhen from the Faculty of Health Sciences and Prof Simon Lee Ming-Yuen from the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, spoke at the forum on the relationship between biomedical sciences and brain science. Prof Yuan gave a talk on brain and cognitive function as well as the effects of mental and neurological disorders, while Prof Lee discussed the relationship between the discovery and the development of neuroactive drugs and natural products.
