The University of Macau (UM) recently held a summit on strategies for promoting the development of the Chinese medicine industry through advanced technologies in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Area. Members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) as well as experts and scholars in the field of Chinese medicine attended the event. Participants discussed strategies for inter-regional and interdisciplinary collaborations in Chinese medicine in response to the Outline of Strategies for the Development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area released earlier by the Chinese government.
UM Rector Yonghua Song delivered a speech, in which he said that the event brought together experts and scholars to propose strategies for the development of the Chinese medicine industry. According to Rector Song, UM will continue to support Chinese medicine research and the commercialisation of research results. The university is committed to improving the quality of Chinese medicine products, establishing international quality standards, and developing innovative drugs and health products, in order to provide technical support for the development of the Chinese medicine industry in the Greater Bay Area.
Dr Tse Chi Wai, chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Society for Chinese Medicine (ISCM) and former chair of UM’s University Council, summarised Macao’s achievements in Chinese medicine research, especially in terms of academic papers published in international journals. He expressed his hope that experts would continue to propose strategies for strengthening Macao’s role as an academic platform in the field. Prof Wang Yitao, director of the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine at UM, also spoke at the summit.
The summit was co-organised by the ISCM and the CAE’s Medicine and Health Section, and was jointly hosted by UM and Guangdong Pharmaceutical University.
