The University of Macau (UM) today (9 June) presented 14 kinds of academic prizes to 51 outstanding graduating students at the Academic Prize Presentation Ceremony 2023 in recognition of their remarkable performance in various disciplines. In the past academic year, UM gave out more than 60 scholarships and academic prizes to nearly 400 students, totalling over MOP 3.8 million.
In his speech, Rector Yonghua Song congratulated the students and expressed his gratitude to all scholarship donors. According to him, with the tremendous support of the central government and the SAR government, UM has developed into an international comprehensive public university with unique features, strong capabilities, and a rising reputation in the international community. Positioning itself as a university rooted in Macao, UM will continue to take part in the development of the Greater Bay Area, integrate into national development, and increase its degree of internationalisation. The university will leverage its strengths and characteristics in promoting talent development, research, and internationalisation. He also encouraged all the recipients to continue to work hard in their academic pursuits, to keep abreast of the development of Macao, the nation, and the world, and to give back to society.

She expresses her gratitude to UM for providing her with diverse opportunities to pursue personal development through not only academic studies, but also community and peer education as well as cultural and arts activities. ‘As a member of the Honours College, I had the opportunity to assist my professor in research and get involved in research projects. My professors provided valuable advice for me both inside and outside the classroom so that I could excel in business competitions. I also made friends with students from different fields and organised various activities through my residential college,’ says Lau, who was also the secretary of the English Debating Team, a member of the Chinese Orchestra, as well as a student helper in an office at the university. These experiences not only broadened her global perspective, but also enhanced her job competencies. Lau will soon be pursuing a master’s degree in management at Tsinghua University and she hopes to work in business consultancy after graduation and assist enterprises in the Greater Bay Area in going global.
