Lampo Leong, professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Macau (UM), has been awarded funding by the China National Arts Fund for his proposal titled ‘The International Aesthetic Expansion of Traditional Ink Art’. Organised by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People’s Republic of China, the China National Arts Fund is the only national art grant through which the Chinese central government supports outstanding artists. Prof Leong’s proposal is the only creative art proposal from Macao to have received this funding in 2022.
Prof Leong’s contemporary ink painting incorporates Western geometric structure with the brushwork of classical ink painting from the East to attain a sensibility of postmodern art and an ethereal atmospheric quality to illustrate the dynamic forces of life. With water and ink colliding and intertwining, an array of ink splashes marches in directional movements to form a central element that works both like a planet orbiting in a mysterious cosmic space and as a surge of light or energy spurts out from within. These abstract images make viewers aware of the miraculous vitality in nature as well as the enigmatic process of creation in the universe.
Lampo Leong is currently a Distinguished Professor of UM. He is also a professor emeritus at the University of Missouri-Columbia and visiting professor at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. His work has been featured in museums and galleries worldwide through more than 70 solo and over 410 national and international group exhibitions. He has received over 95 awards, including a Gold Medal Award at the Creative Quarterly international art competition in New York and an A’ Design Award in Italy. Leong’s works can be found in more than ten museum collections, including the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University. His achievements have been documented in various publications, including being featured on the cover of publications such as the New Art International in New York and the Creative Genius: 100 Contemporary Artists in London.
In addition, a paper co-authored by Prof Leong and his PhD student Yang Chao published in Packaging Engineering, titled ‘Glocalization Expression in International Brand Image Design’, has received a Bronze Medal in the 29th China International Advertising Festival – Great Wall Award in Advertising Academic Research Competition organised by the China Advertising Association. The Great Wall Award is the only advertising award approved by China’s State Council and is praised by the industry as the top prize in advertising research. It is a competition for academic research in advertising and entries must be papers published in domestic or international academic journals or books in the last two years. Only ten prizes were awarded in 2022.
