The University of Macau (UM) today (16 March) held a University of Macau Development Foundation Named Professorship Lecture. Wang Qingjie, University of Macau Development Foundation Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Religions Studies and associate dean of UM’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities, was the keynote speaker and gave a talk titled ‘Thinking of Humanities in the Digital Age and in the Age of Letters’. The talk attracted a full-house audience. During the talk, Prof Wang explored the revolutionary changes in culture and civilisation that might arise at this turning point from the age of letters to the digital age. According to him, with the advent of computers and the mobile Internet, numbers have replaced words, and the era of digital virtual space-time as a historical and cultural carrier and platform for social life has arrived. Changes in the search, collation and dissemination of information have also brought about changes in our cognition, learning, and research.
