In order to promote the May 4th spirit, cultivate a sense of patriotism among the students, and pay tribute to the heroes who are fighting the epidemic on the frontlines, the University of Macau today (4 May) held a May 4th Youth Day Flag-raising Ceremony. Six members of the UM National Flag Guard of Honour who are currently in Macao took up this special flag-raising task. It was the first time that the university webcast a flag-raising ceremony in order to allow more than 10,000 UM faculty and students to participate in the event while avoiding mass gatherings.
The ceremony was held at 8:00 this morning in the Lotus Square in front of the Administration Building. The following individuals attended the ceremony: UM Rector Yonghua Song, Vice Rector Billy So, Registrar Paul Pang, Rector’s Office Director Carol Wong, Global Affairs Office Director Kevin Zhen, and Student Resources Section Head Samson Cheong. The rest of UM members watched the solemn ceremony on their phones or computers in their dormitories, offices or homes.
The deputy captain of the UM National Flag Guard of Honour said the event was very meaningful, because it not only inspired patriotic sentiments in the students, but also made the students deeply appreciate the greatness of the motherland in the face of the epidemic. Another deputy captain said that although Macao is small, there are many young people who have been working on the frontlines during the epidemic to protect the health and safety of Macao residents.
UM held its first flag-raising ceremony in 2018, which has become an important part of the university’s effort to promote national flag culture and educate students on the state of the country. This is the 16th flag-raising ceremony held by the UM National Flag Guard of Honour.
