Inside Hana’s Suitcase, a touching movie based on a true story will be screened at the University of Macau (UM). Fumiko Ishiok, George Brady and the movie director Larry Weinstein will also attend the screening and talk with the audience about Nazis Holocaust education at the Q&A session afterwards. An exhibition, “The Holocaust: Lessons for Humanity”, will coincide with the movie screening.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition “The Holocaust: Lessons for Humanity” organized by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSH) of UM and supported by the Hong Kong Jewish Film Festival will take place at TG Gallery (near Cultural Centre), UM at 4:00pm on 24 November. And the movie Inside Hana’s Suitcase which is based on Karen Levine’s bestselling book Hana’s Suitcase now translated into over 40 languages will be shown at the Cultural Centre of UM following the ceremony.

The movie tells a poignant story of a young Czech Jewish girl Hana Brady and her brother George who grew up in the pre-WWII Czechoslovakia and went through terrible ordeals just because they happened to be Jews. However, it is not merely another Holocaust story but rather looks at how a young Japanese teacher Fumiko Ishioka, together with her students, traced the story of Hana through a suitcase sent to them by the Auschwitz Museum in Poland and how they finally solved the mystery surrounding Hana. The movie’s plot transports the audience through 70 years of history and back and forth across three continents. This is a Holocaust story like no other. It tells a story of unspeakable sadness and also of shining hope. It provides lessons to be learned for a better future.

The screening of the movie is not likely to be repeated in Macao. Fumiko Ishioka, George Brady and the movie director Larry Weinstein will also be here to talk to the audience about the movie and how the subject of Holocaust should be taught.

The exhibition, “The Holocaust: Lessons for Humanity”, during which TV monitors will show testimonies from Holocaust survivors, will coincide with the movie screening. The exhibition will last from 25 November to 27 November from 9.00am to 6.00pm. All are welcome. For enquiries, please contact Ms. Chan of FSH at 83974634 or lchan@um.edu.mo.
